ATOCHA EXPEDITIONS

Offered Exclusively by Captain's Corner

Aboard the Nuestra Senora de Atocha were some of the highest ranking nobility of the King's New World territories. The nobility carried their personal wealth aboard the Atocha along with hundreds of millions of dollars in New World plunder.

The Atocha's manifest, discovered in the Archives of the Indies in Seville, Spain confirmed that the Atocha carried in excess of 47 tons of gold and silver. Also manifested were hundreds of thousands of coins and artifacts that, in today's world, could only be described as priceless.

In 1985, after a sixteen year long search, Mel Fisher, the "Worlds Greatest Treasure Hunter" fulfilled his life long ambition to discover a lost Spanish Galleon laden with New World treasure. His quest was the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, the Admiralta of a fleet of ships bound for Spain and the Kings treasury. The Atocha was lost in a savage hurricane and remained elusive to treasure hunters for nearly four hundred years.

The Atocha's most significant marine archaeological deposit has been carefully preserved and the tools developed to record this historic site have been recreated. This will afford divers an opportunity to personally experience the processes used in the recovery of Atocha artifacts and the meticulous methodologies used to record the archaeological data from the site.

The site of the Atocha's main cultural deposit is a compendium of archaeological, historical and cultural knowledge never seen before. The Atocha's discovery produced the most significant assemblage of period artifacts ever recovered from this era.

For the first time since her discovery, certified open water divers will have an opportunity to dive this historic site. Captain's Corner Dive Center in Key West, along with the Fisher Family Companies and the Conch Farm Research and Education Foundation have entered into an agreement to take divers to this historic site, thirty five miles off the coast of Key West.

Each Atocha Dive Expedition will be a full day adventure. Divers will be introduced to the basics in marine archaeology and the history of the search, discovery and eventual recovery of the Atocha's cargo. These programs were developed to highlight the importance of the preservation of our marine archaeological resources through a cooperative effort between the archaeological and treasure hunting communities.

Successful completion of class work and site dives will be rewarded with a certificate of achievement authenticating the divers participation in an Atocha Dive Expedition.

Base cost for chartering the "Sea Eagle" for the day-long trip is $  2500.00.  This is a favorite trip for dive clubs and other dive groups.

This first time, very special offer is available on a limited, first come first served basis. Please make your reservations as early as possible.
